...HOW [to] LIVE...

When I was a third-year student with one of my friends an amusing case had happened. Myself, she and another friend of ours decided to study a German language. As usual in all the decent language schools from the very first class there were not a single word in Russian.

And at the fifth lesson, we were asked to organize ourselves in pairs and to prepare  a little dialogue on a particular topic. To speed up the process our teacher suggested to ask her instead of looking for a word and its proper form in dictionary. My friend decided to take advantage of advice: when a teacher passed by her slowly, she called her in a whisper, but the teacher did not hear and went on. Then my friend asked the teacher loudly: "Tatiana Ivanovna, how LIVE?" (NOTE: in Russian we do not have a particle TO. So, for Russians this phrase sounds like for English speaking people: “Tatiana Ivanovna, how to LIVE”)... It is obvious that she wanted to ask, as in German, the word “live” would be... but it turned out with the different meaning ...

The situation was comical, but I remembered it for all my life ... How do you have to live? ...

We are all taught from childhood that NEED to go to school, NEED to study well or become troechnik (NOTE: from Soviet times pupils who used to get bad marks (3 from 5), like C in American schools, or “satisfying”, are usually called troechnik – from three – 3), you will not take further education, you'll become blue collar (this link in the chain of reasoning in parents monologues sometimes is missed), and then lose yourself into drinking and your number is up...

A little child brain cannot think out another alternative, because the life is the way it is – a straight road, curves of the road will lead to drug addiction, prostitution, drunkenness, crime ...

But oddly enough, the life road of the vast majority of talented and brilliant people was quite wagged that it could . Perhaps under the influence of this particular observation some mothers tirelessly leads their children to dance classes, on vocals, into theatrical groups and sports section. But while no one seeks to encourage any shoot of ability to construction, orienteering etc.

I know that the most progressive parents try after American manner to get their kids to work in the holidays - at least in McDonald's, even at the gas stations (in my town I saw it), even th clean sand on beaches... Basically, I agree with this initiative because it will allow young people to taste the cost of money and while further hiring will discourage any desire to show the white of eyes themselves "a la genius."

The main thing I want to convey that almost everything is decided for children, while they themselves are rarely asked about anything.

I will not argue about the expense of the obligatory secondary education, perhaps, this initiative is proper from society’s point of view, because it would allow if to raise the level of literacy, to reduce the gap between social classes, which will increase the chances of survival of the society ... in theory, of course ...

But what I think is not correct – is HOW we present this initiative. I remember myself and how I used to go to school. Lessons of winter mornings were just hell – literally I forced myself to go to these lessons and sit on them ... and the very few subjects were interesting…

HIGH SCHOOL! In the 1990s it was fashionable to have a profession that allows you to become a white collar, herewith your education could be completely unrelated to market realities and needs of companies. In fact, after 10 years the situation in Russia has not changed. The only advantage of higher education – it teaches us to think: to think in a way that brain muscle can study and analyze everything, or to think just in a way to find effective ways of how to plagiarize and get a score above the "2"...

After high school everyone definitely MUST get a job, for no one will not feed you, but you also WANT o live in prosperity, as you WANT to have a family and feed your children ...

Hell, when was arranged on one of my (3rd I suppose) jobs, it wanted to start my working process very quickly. It was so cool: you do something tidy and rightly, use your intellectual abilities, prove your aptitude, and they will pay for it ...

One of my former high school group mate once said that the employer does not pay for your knowledge, but for the fact that you are ready to take on responsibility. There is something in it, but now I have come a different conclusion ... although it could be the specificity of my industry.

What else do we all NEED then? …oh…family ...here, the farther away from cities (NOTE: in the described situation is related to Russia) the situation is easier: as soon as the young people have had developed genitals – it is time to get married. Lord! forgive me, but it's nonsense! NEED to get married because WHAT? ... Mashka from the backstreet would steal the only teetotaller in our village? Or, as mother says, tomorrow you'll be old and ugly and no one will want to marry you ... (Sorry, young men, I describe everyday life situations of women, because I better aware of IT).

Even in large cities of our country, some girls voluntarily go to the altar with no love, not because of pregnancy, but because they MUST. The worst thing that, all HER relatives “saw” (NOTE: in Russian we have a slang word
пилить, which means to annoy and trouble someone with something) guy, that he finally decided on a crucial step.

Lord, let them stay at their pleasure – to know the world that then they could bear children and raise them “with mind”. But no - it MUST be the way Mama and Dad say – they know better and because we have not seen life (from proverb "will live as long as me – will understand ...").

I am very imposed upon the trend in Europe to send for the year school/college graduates to see the world, because it is an adventure which develop horizons. Certainly there is a question of funding, but here it is possible to give an answer - let your kids from 9th form set themselves the goal and save up to travel. If the parents can help with money – that is great, because children need a start. During these travels a lot could be learned, compared with their country, conclusions could be made, and independence could be developed - the ability to lead own household.

Everyone MUST have a good job, be respected. I think, it applies to guys more, but this "postulate" is not bypassed girls, because “who wants to communicate with you if you're sitting on your husband’s neck and, say, practice in ikebana, macramé, or even write poems, or Lord forbid! paint - it's all a whim, and parasitism.

For some reason I think it is right to have a job that will allow you to be free in life, from someone or something. If someone would say that I take on job of floor polisher for Moscow underground with my current wage and just 4 working hours per day – I would have thought of it!

Another thing, if your well-paid and right job emotes you, in fact, your job is your hobby. This is great, perhaps. Although I meet such people less and less. Most of my peers are working to:
  •   save money and to start "something different"
  •   save money and will never work
  •   save money and leave Russia forever
  •   have the opportunity to have maternity leave with not empty handes
  •   etc.
In general, for the work of my generation - is means, a tool. At that time, we all want to have creativity at work. I think that everybody understands that the pure creativity for white collars will not happen, but if there is a possibility of realization and embodiment at least some ideas, it's stimulating to come to work tomorrow at 9am. And if there is no creativity, then everyone stands up for work automatically – ‘cos alarm bell and engine is now running.

It turns out that the robots are coming to work, and only a few have the ability to remain (about desire it is hard to say) be creative - to generate ideas. Here lapsus lingual should be made that not everyone can generate ideas IN PRINCIPLE. There are people whose brains are able just to solve put problems, but not create them. And very sad situation emerges: the employer requires from you all at once, and you get tired of this eternal MUST, of negotiating with your conscience, you don’t complete your job very well because of dead-line, after which ypu MUST send a report, analysis, or something else. And then you comfort yourself: I work in a prestigious company, I can show my business card to everyone (and there is said in your BC - Senior XXX, Deputy Director of XXX - just a scrud) ... even if there is no satisfaction ...

And then you can bet your wife an ultimatum: you're sitting with the children, doing nothing, and I'm authority and even feed you all ... At the same time your woman, have children because MUST - the biological clock is ticking, sits with children at home because she MUST to save on babysitter, and she MUST not trust babysitters - they beat the children steal the jewels...

... And then kindergarten children, the school (the best! - it is NEEDED), bruises, cigarette in their pockets, condoms, final exams, college, and you did not notice how you are already in the middle of all this and you teach your children HOW to LIVE, but not HOW to be HAPPY ...No one teaches .us about happiness.

I can not say that everything that I have described - it is about me. I purposely exaggerated some situations.

I was not taught to be happy, I just recently began to learn to listen to myself and do what is not accepted in our society – it is not the way HOW I must live ... because I can fall into the trap, be duped, or, even worse, lose my job ... that's too great a loss :-)

If you've read it all – a great Respect to you, if you just have a look at the following sentence - you know the essence of all this scribbling:

... I WANT to LIVE HAPPILY...

...About Moscow...

There are a lot of different topics in my head, which could be covered in this blog, but for some reason my hand stretched out to write specifically about Moscow.

If you ask about what kind of city Moscow is, I will answer: "Moscow spoils people." Yes, I am considering this city is such a way. I myself come here, come with my friends and close people me, here I’ve met with visitors like me, and now after six years, I can say that Moscow spoils people.

Sometimes it fell upon me to  argue with one of my very closest friend, who was born here and has been living during all her life, that Moscow - a city where people are different from other citizens of Russia. She takes offense at me, and she is right -  it is her city, she must defend it. But when people ask me if I was born here, I usually reply, "Thanks God - NO." And when I tell this I'm not trying to show any contempt for this city, no, I just always find myself thinking about what I have another place to get away from this city, and those who were born here usually don’t, and this I feel sorry for them.

Having moved in here in quite conscious age, I can make an objective opinion about what is good, that is bad about Moscow. But I want to make a note, when I say that "Moscow spoils people", I do not mean walls of the city, its streets, its rivers, ponds, etc., I mean people.

Perhaps there are a lot of them (well...already us) here in Moscow. The critical mass of people has overcame a red line a long time, so we are fighting for a place on the subway car (for 10 sq.sm), fighting for a step on escalator, fighting for none can climb into a queue you are staying in for ten minutes or more.

That that's the thing - we're fighting here. I'm tired of someone pulls me, catches my tights in subway car, coming on my foot and not apologizing. I'm so not used to it and do not want be used to. If I have inadvertently violated someone’s comfort and privacy, I must apologize, but in turn I will get a wolf's eye-blink, especially when it comes to a person of 45-55 years old.

Work experience received in a different city is equal to zero. Diploma received in another city (with a few exceptions) is equal to zero, or equal to a culinary college diploma. At the interview I may be asked if I want to have children and when I want to have them. The change could be not given if it is less than 50 kopeek (NOTE: 100 kopeek=1 RUB). If you are from REGIONS, you "should stand in the end of queue and skip the Muscovites (reference to socket of Master's program in Moscow State University, by the way), etc.

An individual theme is migrant workers. Two years ago, I caught myself thinking that 60% of people if a subway car are immigrants from Central Asia. They had lively talk, smiled, hugged, flirted boasting golden decoration and teeth, and at the same time with no twinge of conscience they could spit on the left and right, scratch intimate parts of body. There were not so many gustarbiters when I had just moved in Moscow! We are close to them in subway, walk on same roads, sometimes eat in same McDonald's. But at the same time we do not think of them as of real people, look at them as inanimate scenery of the city.

Perhaps most offensive to me in this city - is the transformation of relationships between people: many living in here begin evaluate all aspects of life with money. "Will come, help to do smthng? .." - "Find the professionals, and even if I come to you through whole Moscow, help and go back, it will take at least three hours!!!". It could be a situation when I myself would not want me to be pulled from the usual schedule of life, crazy btw, but if you arrange if with me in advance, at least before a week - I can help. And if it is an urgent matter, my friends know ne – I’ll give up everything and come. In general, I feel lack of humanity in Moscow.

I remembered a story told be a great teacher of Russian language in my 7-11 grades Serovf Nina Nikolaevna (a wonderful woman, I’m proud of that I have learned something from her). She told during one of our lessons, as her friend, a woman in a very advanced age, was forced to go to hospital in the morning rush hour with her grandson. She understood well that a very few people would be happy to see in a bus an old lady with a small child (4-5 y.o) in a crush. So she asked her grandson to say loudly, "Hello, PEOPLE!" when they enter a bus. The boy said it with great enthusiasm, and people smiled and this morning they were a little kinder to each other and the whole world.

However, I do not want to say that Moscow - this is a horrible city, otherwise I would not then lived here.

I can buy a 24/7 something to eat, drink and some necessary medicine and even sporting goods. Believe me, this is great benefit, which id deprived for inhabitants of towns with population less than 500-600 thousand people. If I would be given the fluff by one employee this day -on the next day I’ll knock in another place.

In Moscow you can visit a lot of concerts, performances and festivals. The concentration of classical museums and museums of modern art just rolls over.

In Moscow you can satisfy a want of any hobby you have or even a thrust open to another which existence you was not aware about while living in your place of birth.

In Moscow you can find bike paths, even you should really search for them. Here you can ride on rollers and board.

Well, in general, is an ancient city: great architecture, nice streets, beautiful parks, and when it is spring and everything is blooming – it’s just amazing. And the parks! Caricino alone worth a lot:). Finally the great history of a place is so attractive ...

I just need remind myself often about city’s beauty for Moscow doesn’t spoil me.

...About men... (continuation)

How to build a relationship with a modern men

At this time I would like to share with my vision of what is happening in Russia today between men and women (sometimes it is very hard to call IT relationships).

I suppose, that some men could have emotional spasms and /
or disruptive reaction after reading my thoughts. But I emphasize that I only give my personal opinion on the matter and some colorful examples.

So, in my previous post I stressed that I was born in Siberia, and currently I’m living in Moscow, for a certain purpose. This is very important for my piecewise and discordant narratives: I am going to make comparisons between the men from THERE, Siberia, and from HERE, Moscow. I think that women and girls from non-Siberian REGIONS (as people commonly called from HERE call all places different from Moscow) will recognize the very similar situations that happed with them.

I would like to begin that first time I was able to estimate Moscow’s male population was six years ago, when I came to Moscow to receive the Masters degree. And the first thing that was caught by my eye is a large number of young metrosexual men who are trying to make acquaintance with the impression, create an aura of supermen around themselves, but after a closer look you can realize – there is nothing inside them.

Once I was walking home from subway in the rain - umbrella was absolutely useless. I met a couple: a boy and a girl who was wrapping in her already soaking wet jacket. The guy was walking slowly. Most likely they came out from cinema and walked to subway station, the distance from one to another is about 600 meters. If I were this guy would catch a car and spend 100  roubles to give a lift my DRY girlfriend.

But now it is so important. The more important is a fact that men from HERE have forgotten how to charm women and take care of them and they don’t really want to make any favor to women. In Moscow (as, perhaps, in some European countries, as well as in the U.S.), a man willing to make any charm and favor to women looks at like it is service. In other words, he expects that he will have something in return. What is SOMETHIG, I think, everyone can guess. And it doesn’t matter if we a talking about rescuing woman’s life, or about hammering a nail... well, now I’m paltering, because I can hammer a nail by myself.

It is common practice in THERE (Siberia - just recalling) that when even not so familiar man meets a girl, and they are on the way, he offers to carry her bags.  And I can give you millions of stories about how guys (living in the dorm, I have to say) were repairing faucets, computers, hanging shelves just for cup of tea, or a meal.

Once in HERE I was on my way back to my apartment from airport having suitcase and my skiing, one men age of 40 or something cussed me out for the fact that I almost hit him with my ski... rather than help me to get into a train...KNIGHT!

I think the most appropriate epigraph for Moscow – "time is money", and the guy from HERE at best will  offer to pay for a professional repairman  rather than make a favor and help by himself... Yes, sometimes we have financial difficulties, but if I ask him to help, it means that trust him... Usually I can pay for repair services by myself.

Here is another good example from my life. After breaking up with my husband during six months I was living with friend who was the only sing one among all my friends. By the will of fate, we were forced to leave this apartment and move to another. My situation was complicated by the fact that I was supposed to transfer my staff a new rented apartment from two places –  an apartment where I lived during the marriage, and the apartment where we lived with my friend. I have to confess that I have quite a lot of staff. Renting a gazelle (NOTE: russian mini-van) was difficult for me because all my money was stolen from my account. I asked almost all my friends, including closest ones (what I would do without them :-)). I also asked M1 (he is from HERE, Moscow), and M2, who had studied in Novosibirsk in my University, he is almost from THERE, Siberia, if they could help me to transfer my staff.
Prior to the start of “the Great Move”, I agreed that M1 will help my friend with the transportation of things from her apartment, and M2 will help with relocation of things from the apartment where I lived previously with a husband. As for evil, in the apartment of my ex-husband I left my cell phone. M1 was unable to get through to me and decided to just not come.
Simultaneously, during a conversation about whether he could help me with the movement M2 posed two questions: if I have large-dimensioned things (if he need to come at big car), and whether there would be any other guys with whom he could have hauled things. Moreover, he brought for assistance one of his friend,  whom I did not know. And after I said that I am embarrassed about assistance of unknown people, he replied: "Forget, he helps me...”
As it turned out, his friend too is  from Siberia.

Facing several times with the men's practical approach in helping us (women), and after hearing it once drunk talk of few Muscovites  I do not expect any unselfish help from men for free.

I remember another illustrative case: often I use subway, and after entering a train I realize that all the seats are occupied and 50-60% of the seats are occupied by men. And I, on heels, ride standing up. But the most disgusting is that sitting on the bench, guys still allow themselves to stare at me very unseemly way. Just extreme rudeness, I tell you.

So I, and not only I, of course, begin to learn to do everything by myself, from solutions of small everyday problems, to solving really huge ones. I live in a such way for a quite long time (at least a year), and understand: here I am, I can do everything by myself, earn money, travel alone, do my hobbies, look after myself...

And I met a man, in his age of 30-35 he already has a beer belly, allow himself to go unshaven and with outstretched knees of his pants, he could even still living with his parents, and travel abroad only for two times –  in Turkey and Egypt – by voyage waybill. However, they all see next to them a beautiful and well maintained woman, earning money by herself, and not dipping deeply in her purse, and, for God sake, not dipping in HIS purse, washing, cleaning, cooking, which is not against his gatherings with friends. She should somehow give a birth and brought up children but in a way he would be comfortable with...

The question is, why do I need a such men next to me in my life? .. After I learned to do a lot things by myself, yes, I would like to have a man who is a little bit of a following: earning no less than me, wants kids and willing to educate them. Apparently, I need to go to the bookshop and ask for a book from "Fantasy” section.

At the same time has any guy thought about how much effort and money we girls spend on our good look (and time-how much it goes!). It is very difficult to come from a work and do household, but also do hobby – we still have to have something to be interesting to them, and we must not ask them about some financial assistance.

It seems that man has a right to think so only because he is a man. They are also in a less amount than we are – we should cherish them. And the fact that we have already  take on ourselves a part of "male" social functions still pulling on all "female" functions - is not even discussed.

I once wondered in all came in our (NOTE: our = Russian) society. I think it's the echoes of war, when in villages only lonely males came back from theatre of WW
II  (NOTE: the World War Second), and women were ready to kill each other in the struggle for even crippled men. Yes, probably, our grandmothers and mothers have contributed in their time to the current situation. But I can understand them too. In the 1990s, most suicides ware married men with children, and women had to be mom and dad.

Unfortunately we are not able to rewrite history, but somehow I do not want to live like this ...
